What movies are blockbusters in 2018? What genre of movie is most popular in the market of 2018? Does viewer’s rating have a positive relationship with the movie’s gross income? This story is going to analyze the top 100 movies of 2018 of IMDb’s list and compare each movie’s viewer’s rating and its gross income.

The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) published the top 100 movies every year. IMDb indicated that the list is based on the films’ popularity on the website. That said, they calculate the number of page views by IMDb’s unique users. Based on the ranking, the top 100 movies list complies some critical information, such as viewers’ star-rating and each movie’s gross income.

As the bubble chart shown, the action movie is viewer’s favorite movie genre. Among this, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther lead IMDb’s top 10 movies of 2018 list. As stated in the list, there are 896,623 viewers voted Avengers: Infinity War, and it has 8.4 degree in start-rating. Meanwhile, the movie earned $678.82 million dollars in 2018. Thus, we can find that there is a positive relationship between its viewer’s rating and gross income. The Black Panther also has a similar situation while we examine its viewer’s rating and gross earnings.

Beyond the action movies, there are two different genres of movie on the top 10 movies. One is Incredible 2, which is an animation, and another is Bohemian Rhapsody, which is a biography movie. Incredible 2 has 7.6 degree on viewer’s star-rating, and $608.5 million dollars in 2018. The animation really hits family’s choice. Bohemian Rhapsody is a biography movie which introduce the legendary British rock band Queen and lead singer Freddie Mercury. The movie is the only one biography movie on IMDb’s top 10 movies of 2018 list.

There is another interesting point here. If the movie has a high star-rating, it usually has a greater number of viewers’ votes. That said, the number of viewer’s votes has a positive relationship with its’ star-rating.
